Malaysia endeavours to manage the Country`s tropical forests according to the guidelines of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) by the year 2000. The Malaysian-German Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation Project-planned for a period of ten years-supports the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia in this challenge. The first phase of the Project is planned for the period from October 1994 until September 1997. A second three years phase was recommended during the Project Progress Review in January 1997. During the first phase, the Project elaborated the basic principles for the improvement of the management of the forest resources. Main principles is an environmentally sound, multiple-use forest management system. It is aiming on sustainable use of timber resources by mitigating the environmental impact during harvesting. Important results achieved during the first phase are: - Improvement of the existing Forest Management System on the basis of the project and management cycle, i.e planning, implementation and controlling, - Development of the Forest Management Planning System, including determination of sustainable Annual Allowable Cuts and incorporation of an Environmental Impact Assessment, - Proposals for the improvement of silvicultural systems, - Framework for a comprehensive Human Resources Development programme focusing on the operational level (forest labourers, rangers, District Forest Officers). The Project is integrated into the Forestry Department Headquarters Peninsular Malaysia and implemented according to plan. The result are accepted by the partner and are implemented in a pilot area in the State of Terengganu.
