The 10,736ha Loagan Bunut National (LBNP) in Sarawak is one of the important demonstration areas for peat swamp forest (PSF) and wetlands conservation in Malaysia. Its 650ha lake represents the largest peat swamp fed freshwater body in Sarawak that is least understood hydrologically. A study was carried out to establish the water quality status of the Bunut Lake. Fifteen water sampling stations were established within the lake and its vicinity, and 16 water quality parameters such pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), nitrate (NO), phosphate (PO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and microbial counts were studied. The results indicate that the water quality of the lake is predominantly characterised by low DO, relatively high ammoniacal nitrogen and high sediment loads. The TSS concentration and turbidity were found to be extremely high (less than 1000 mg/L) in one of the feeder streams, namely Sg. Teru. The overall water quality index (WQI) for the water bodies in the study area was found to be under Class III.
