The use ofmedicinal plants is often associated with traditional knowledge (TK),socio-cultural, religious and economic practices of a community. Malaysia is a signatory to the International Convention on Biodiversity (signed in 1994)and has developed National Policy on Biological Diversity (1998) committed to the conservation and development of TK for national and local interests. Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010), the Malaysian government through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) has made a special effort to develop a database on TK as stipulated under CBD. Under this special project implemented by FRIM, our main objective is to establish a centralized database on TK of medicinal and aromatic plants used by Orang asli or indigenous people in Peninsular Malaysia. As a component of this project, a household survey was conducted in 2008, in RPS Iskandar, Bera Pahang to understand the use of medicinal and aromatic plants of a Semelai community Based on our survey, we found 233 medicinal plants species and 42 aromatic plants species (by their local name) that are still used by the Orang asli Semelai at RPS Iskandar, to treat various illnesses and diseases. It was noted that the younger generation had limited knowledge on medicinal plants compared to elder.
