Performance of phosphorus sources in cotton crop

A field experiment was conducted to study the response of cotton to different phosphatic fertilizer sources i.e. DAP and SSP (50 to 90 kg ha-1) at Students Farm, Department of Agronomy, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan. The study aimed to observe the efficiency of different phosphatic fertilizer sources in improving the growth, yield of seed cotton and plant P uptake. Phosphorus was applied in three different doses 50, 70 and 90 kg ha-1 as DAP and SSP was also applied in the same quantities. The proportion of N fertilizer was kept the same in treatment six (140 kg ha-1), and N was applied as urea. The results showed that higher dose of phosphatic fertilizers (90 kg ha-1) in the both form produced good seed cotton yield, while SSP remained advantageous by keeping the soil pH below 7, while in DAP treated soils, the pH was higher than 7.0. The experience from the present research suggested that Phosphorus is an essential element for plant and it stimulates growth of young plants, giving them a vigorous start, its management and nutrition has both economic and environmental implications. However, phosphorus application in the form of DAP was relatively more effective for better plant growth, seed cotton yield, leaf P content and overall P uptake by the plants.
