Utilization of natal dens by red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and other burrowing mammals in relation to landscape structure in Belarus

Data on degree of joint utilization of dens and interspecific interactions while breeding of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and other burrowing mammalian species is given for three study areas differing by the extend of human alteration of the territory. Independently on landscape structure red foxes occupied mainly dens for rearing cubs that where dug out by themselves or other red fox individuals. Frequency of den exploitation dug out by other mammalian species (mainly the badger and beaver) did not exceed 20%. Red fox dens were used by badgers, wolves, raccoons and common dogs. In most cases subsequent or even simultaneous exploitation of dens by red foxes and other species was possible without physical suppression of one species by another.
