Control of bean beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus Fab.) using edible oils on leguminous seeds and in combination with powdered plant materials on mungbean seeds

Studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of edible oils against bean beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus) on soybean, pole sitao, cowpea and peanut seeds and to determine the combined effects of edible oils and powdered plant materials on bean bettle oviposition and adult emergence on mungbean seeds. In study 1, the legume seeds were coated with edible oil and exposed to bean beetles in a free choice bioassay. Results of the bioassays revealed that the edible oil is effective in reducing bean beetle emergence on leguminous seeds particularly in cowpea (16.19%) and pole sitao (16.66%) seeds relative to its untreated counterparts (22.83% and 26.22%, respectively). In the case of soybean and peanut seeds, these seeds were less preferred as oviposition site for bean beetles, thus the seeds provided higher percent adult emergence among the four leguminous seeds due to minimal number of laid eggs. In study 2, mungbean seeds were coated with edible oil and powdered plant materials from various sources and exposed to adult bean beetles in a free choice bioassay. Results of the bioassays revealed that edible oil alone is effective in reducing bean beetle emergence (0.11%) while the powered plant materials varied in their oviposition deterrence effects (20.1-76.5%) and did not contribute markedly to the inhibition of adult emergence (0.48-1.42%). The effectiveness on oviposition deterrence among the powdered plant materials is ranked as follows: black pepper ipil-ipil marigold turmeric. It is highly recommended that edible oils be used in protecting leguminous seeds. Adding powdered plant materials on the oil-coated mungbean seeds would only add up to the cost of control but did not protect the seeds. The use of edible oils as seed protectant against bean beetle is very promising technology which can help small farmers in protecting their stored seeds while waiting for the next planting.
