The outbreak of coconut scale insects (CSI) particularly up to first half of 2014 has been a historical phenomenon especially demonstrated in the landscape of UPLB lower and upper campuses. CSI destroyed hundreds of coconut trees, its palm relatives and other economically important crops. The pest infestation was so crucial that it seriously affected all aspects of coconut farming, by-products, lives of coconut farmers and consumers. In mid-July 2014 came super typhoon Glenda which traversed the Southern Tagalog area severely destroying everything in its path. Plants were not spared so with coconut trees. As a result, populations of CSI went down, although a decline has already been observed in some areas in eastern Laguna. Results from recent surveys are compared with those obtained from last year's monitoring. Traces of the 2014 damage on coconut and alternate hosts are still present in the oldest leaves. Alternate host plants remains as important sources of colonies that can infest new growth on recovering coconut palms. At the same time, the reactions of several native and exotic species of palms to CSI in the lower and upper areas of the UPLB were reviewed and the current infestation level around the UPLB campus was reassessed. Also, the continuing coexistence of mixed species of CSIS (Aspidiotus spp.) with the buff coconut mealybug (BCM, Nipaecoccus nipae) presents a confounded pest problem.
