High through put evaluation for host plant resistance to biotic stresses in rice

The Biotic Stress Resistance Evaluation Center (BSREC) of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) provides support on high throughput evaluation of valuable breeding materials for host plant resistance to rice blast, bacterial leaf blight (BB), rice tungro virus (RTV), brown planthopper (BPH) and green leahopper (GLH). The center also provides some research support on phenotyping of populations for genetic studies on resistance to rice blast, BB, RTV, rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV), rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV), BPH, and GLH. Thus, BSREC is expected to deliver the identified resistant varieties and breeding lines to the concerned breeders and help national programs. In 2014 BSREC was able to screen about 30,000 breeding lines for resistance against the two BB isolates, PXO 61 and PXO 86; 21,500 lines for rice blast, 4,200 lines for RTV, 13,000 lines for BPH and GLH, as well as 1,089 lines for phenotyping of populations for genetic studies on resistance to RRSV and RGSV. Additional rice breeding materials from different research groups are continuously coming in to BSREC, including hybrid seed materials from private companies. Full cost recovery is implemented to maintain the BSREC insect and disease colonies/cultures, facilities and manpower. The center has seven IRRI staff with expertise in entomology and plant pathology, four temporary contract workers and contract laborers hired whenever necessary. BSREC is a part of the Cross Cutting Research and Development Program (CCRD) under Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology Division (PBGB) of IRRI.
