Marine nematode fauna from mangrove areas of Pakistan

The mangrove areas of Pakistan are unique being representative of the largest arid zone mangrove in the world. Mangrove swamps support a high biological diversity of microorganisms other than algae. The mangrove environment represents one of the most intensively studied tropical marine ecosystems. Pakistan, which has a long coastline of 990 km along the Arabian Sea, is studded with abundant natural resources like mangrove ecosystem. In Pakistan there are three patches of mangrove in the province of Balochistan: In Sonmiani, Kalmat and Jiwani, while Indus Delta has swamps at Sandspit, Rehri and Keti Bandar. Free-living marine nematodes associated with mangrove swamps were investigated. Analysis of meiofauna samples revealed the presence of a large number of new and known nematode genera and species of the orders Enoplida, Chromadorida, Trefusiida and Monhysterida.
