Activity of ascorbate-glutathione cycle in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus) under LED lighting

Russian. Использование светодиодного освещения с узкой красной или синей полосой спектра излучения приводит к развитию в листьях огурца окислительного стресса, сопровождающегося изменением активности важной защитной системы растительной клетки - аскорбат-глутатионового цикла. Комбинированное использование красных и синих светодиодов недостаточно для создания полноценного освещения при выращивании растений огурца. Предполагается, что расширение полос испускания светодиодного осветителя за счет использования светодиодов с максимумами излучения в желто-оранжевой и голубой области спектра позволит сконструировать более эффективные источники фотосинтетически активного света. При проектировании таких источников освещения определение активности аскорбат-глутатионового цикла может дать ценную информацию, а именно: нормализация функционирования активности аскорбат-глутатионового цикла будет свидетельствовать об эффективности создаваемых светильников.

English. Light-emitting diode lighting appears one of the most perspective sources of artificial light for greenhouse plants’ growing. Low energy consumption along with high coefficient of luminary efficiency allows constructing of the light source with high-level of photosynthetic effect. Along with this, utilization of light-emitting diodes requires development of optimal spectral composition of light, influencing the dynamics of oxidative processes of greenhouse plants. Light-emitting diode lighting with one spectral line (red or blue) leads to stress action of plants, causing accumulation of reactive oxygen species and intensification of the process of peroxide lipid oxidation. The main goal of the research appears evaluation of the peculiarities of the functioning of ascorbate-glutathione cycle in cucumber plants within light-emitting diode lighting for revealing of the mechanisms of oxidative stress occurrence in plants during light-emitting diodes’ utilization. For the experiment greenhouse cucumber variety Kurazh has been analyzed. Light-emitting lamps Philips TL-D 36W/765 in regime 14 h of lighting has been used. Changes of the content of general and recovered ascorbate along with reconstructed and oxidized glutathione in cucumber plants have been measured. External appearance of the plants, grown under white, red, blue and red-blue light has been compared. It has been concluded that use of light-emitting diode lighting with non-optimal spectral composition leads to the development of oxidative stress in cucumber leaves, accompanied with changes in the activity of ascorbate-glutathione cycle.
