Triazole priming improves germination potential, antioxidant levels and reduces oxidative damage in wheat seeds

Triazoles are extensively used as fungicides and have also established some plant-growth regulating effects that need to be further investigated. Here, the authors tested four already known triazoles for priming effects on wheat seed biochemistry and germination. For this purpose, seeds were hydroprimed and primed with 10, 15 and 20 ppm solutions of four different triazoles for 8 h. The biochemical and germination profiles of both primed and non-primed seeds were compared to determine the priming effects. The germination index and the germination rate were improved by all triazole priming treatments. Among the seed biochemical attributes, 20 ppm of triazole 1 significantly decreased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Application of 10 ppm triazole 2 notably enhanced the protein content. Moreover, both catalase and peroxidase were activated markedly by triazole 4 compared with the control. Seed priming with triazoles at a low concentration (10 ppm) showed the best results compared with all other treatments. In general, triazole seed priming accelerated the germination and improved the antioxidant defense system of wheat seeds. The tested triazoles can be applied as priming and fungicidal treatments, resulting in excellent dual effect.
