Effects of inverse size-exclusion chromatography on pore structure of cellulose materials

Detailed analysis of factors affecting resolution and precision of inverse size-exclusion chromatography of wet wood and cellulose materials was presented. Dextrans were selected as the appropriate probe molecules along with series of sugars and low-molar mass poly(ethylene glycols). Viscometry was use to determine intrinsic viscosities of dextrans solutions and thus estimate reliable hydrodynamic radii. The influence of standards concentration, flow of mobile phase, sample pre-treatment loading density of the sample, inhomogeneity of loading, air present etc. was determined in order to optimise conditions of analysis. Procedure of sample fibrising or grinding and loading was given along with parameters of chromatography and indications for assessing property of the results. Numerous examples of applications were showed, including pulp of various delignification degree and cellulose material, which was cyclic dried and re-wetted with water. The changes of poplar wood porosity were determined during various method treating. The influence of grinding method, multiple freezing ultrasonication in water suspension, high-temperature hydrolysis and steam explosion on distribution of pore specific volume was discussed. The conclusions connected to application if the methods in technology of bioethanol from wood were drawn.
