This paper analyzes the basic postulates of the modern commodity exchange. The development of commodity exchange has been considered in the context of the local agribusiness capacity building. The agribusiness development is one of the policy strategic pillars in Serbia. Thus, the paper presents the theoretical background of the agricultural commodity exchanges functioning. Institutionally arranged, it could contribute to the further development of agribusiness in the country. Furthermore, based on adoption of the Commodity Exchange Law the expected effects (addressed both to spot and derivative trading) on the agribusiness functioning are analyzed in this paper. It is concluded that the overall competitive potential of the Serbian agribusiness could not be achieved without the parallel existence of the market mechanisms and institutions that would strengthen the capacity of the local agriculture to compete in the global market.
