Toxic activity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) belong to a class of toxic environmental pollutants. PAHs are produced during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, tobacco, wood, garbage, and other organic substances and by natural processes, such as forest fires and decomposition of organic matter. Many PAHs and their epoxides are highly toxic, mutagenic and/or carcinogenic to microorganisms as well as to higher systems including humans. Toxic activity of 4 PAHs, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene, against yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (112, Hefebank Weihenstephan) was investigated in the present study. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was grown on the Sabouraud maltose broth (HiMedia, Mumbai, India). The growth of yeast cells was not affected by investigated PAHs in the examined range of concentrations (10-600 μM). Potential use of yeasts in bioremediation of PAHs is suggested.
