Evaluation of feed and histopathological lesions of some organs of laying hens – Possible implication on meat quality

Poultry meat, eggs, and products derived from them are at strict safety control. Special attention is directed towards possible contamination of poultry feed. To achieve these goals a reliable laboratory analysis are needed. Among undesirable substances, mycotoxins and some trace elements pose a health risk to humans and animals due to their harmful biological properties and common occurrence in food and feed. In this study, random flock of broiler breeder hens was monitored for four months. 14 feed samples were taken and the content of mycotoxins and some trace elements were determined. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was developed for detection of 12 different mycotoxins. Aflatoxin B1 was detected with HPLCwith fluorescence detection. Among mycotoxins prevailed deoxynivalenol (DON) in the concentration range 0.112-0.280 mg/kg. Beside DON, some samples contained low concentrations of fumonisin B1, B2 and tenuazoic acid. Trace elements (mangan, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury, lead, arsenic, selenium), detected by ICP-MS were mostly at permitted levels. Samples of liver, kidney and spleen were taken at the slaughterhouse and histopathological examinations were done. No marked changes were found, which altogether shows on good health status of animal and consequently on good meat product.
