Developing of rice variety om8959 - early maturtiy, high yielding, good grain quality and resistant to blast disease

Rice variety OM8959 was developed from the cross combination of OM1723/OM5451. It belongs to very early maturity group (Ao) with 88-92 days in direct seeding. OM8959 has many good agronomic traits such as intermediate plant height of 110-115 cm, high panicle number/m2 with 323-400 panicles; high grain number per panicle 107-145; 1000 grain weight of 26.5-27.0 g, high and stable yielding performance. Grain quality of OM8959 met the export criteria with long slender grain, low chalkiness percentage (0.9%), intermediate amylose content (22.1%), soft gel consistency (77.3 mm). OM8959 was highly resistant to blast disease, moderately resistant to brow plant hopper and tolerant to salt concentration of 3%o.
