The beneficial effects on pig health and growth performance as well as the economic benefits of using growth promoting and/or prophylactic antibiotics have been established. However, with worldwide concern over the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture, the prophylactic and growth promoting use of antibiotics in pig production will likely be seriously reduced if not eliminated. The potential costs associated with a ban on the use of antibiotics in pig production have necessitated examining alternative technologies. In this review, ecological alternatives, such as pre- and probiotics, and bacteriocidal alternatives, such as bacteriophages and bacteriocins, to conventional antibiotics are discussed.
