Kabutihan sa Pamayanan : a community-based mushroom production in Aurora and Nueva Ecija (Philippines)

Mushroom is now becoming popular in the Philippines. There is now an increased recognition of mushroom in the Filipino culture because of its economic, environmental, and health benefits. Its income generating potential and nutritional value contributes to the food and income security. The abundance of farm waste such as rice hull and minimal capital requirement makes mushroom production a viable additional income-generating activity in the small-scale farming communities. However, the lack of knowledge and access to production materials and other support services hinder farmers from venturing into this activity. Seven individuals in Maria Aurora, Aurora and another seven in Talavera, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] undertook mushroom production. These groups of potential mushroom growers are mostly housewives of farmers. A 3-day training on mushroom production and processing was conducted providing the group with the theoretical and practical skills on producing mushroom. After the training, some 1,000 oyster mushroom fruiting bags were provided as start-up kit generating an income of Php 30,400. This served as their capital-roll over fund which was used to buy materials for the mushroom production. By 2016, the groups earned an income of Php 21,700 from almost 1,000 oyster mushroom fruiting bags. Some 41kg were consumed by the members and their communities. They were also able to generate Php 23,620 through selling 1,181 mushroom fruiting bags. Part of the profit was retained in the group as their capital roll-over fund which was used to buy materials for the next production. While the remaining amount were divided among members of the group. The above experience shows that there's a lot of money in the farm waste.
