Boron fertilizer application on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of boron fertilizer on the growth, yield and quality of tomato from January 11 to March 23, 2016 at the Cagayan Valley Research Center, San Felipe, City of Ilagan, Isabela [Philippines] with four levels of boron (1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 kg/ha) from two sources (Solubor Borax and Fertibor) and untreated control as treatments arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design in three replications. Tallest plants were obtained in plots applied with 1.5 and 3.0 kg/ha boron regardless of fertilizer material. Likewise, some plots produced comparable number of fruits per cluster, number of marketable fruits per kilogram, highest fruit yield per 10 sq m sampling area, lesser infestation of blossom end rot and least cracked fruits, and highest shelf life of 96 percent out of one kilogram fruits stored in 10, 20 and 30 days. Marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) is highest in plots applied with 3.0 kg/ha boron from Fertibor with 18.51 percent. Based from the result of the study, the application of boron at the rate of 1.5 to 3.0 kg/ha regardless of source enhanced the growth, yield and shelf life of tomato. However, the marginal benefit cost ratio is highest in plants applied with 3 kg/ha boron from Fertibor, hence recommended.
