Evaluation of local substrates on the growth and yield of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus)

This study investigated the growth and yield performance of oyster mushroom and to determine the profitability of producing mushroom grown in different substrates. The substrates were prepared into six different treatments and was replicated four times, namely: T1 (rice straw), T2 (50% rice straw + 50% sawdust), T3 (50% rice straw + 50% corn cobs), T4 (50% rice straw + 50% banana leaves), T5 (corn cobs), and T6 (banana leaves). The result of analysis of two trials in 2014-2015 showed that T2 (50% rice straw + 50% sawdust) had the highest average fresh yield of 283.75 grams and 212.25 grams during the first and second trial, respectively. However, yields of all treatments did not differ significantly during the second trial. Overall, the mushrooms in combined substrates generally exhibited better growth than those in single substrate treatment. Profitability analysis per 100 fruiting bags further revealed that T2 (50% rice straw + 50 sawdust) has attained the highest net income and this combination is highly recommended for farmers' adoption to augment their farm income.
