Geographic distribution and race identification of Fusarium wilt disease in the Philippines

Fusarium wilt of banana caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a major constraint in the Philippines' Cavendish production. Fusarium wilt is also a serious problem on many banana cultivars grown for local consumption of smallholders and big industries. Field survey and sample collection of Fusarium wilt in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao [Philippines] was conducted. The activities were done in selected sites of 22 banana-producing provinces. The vascular strand samples obtained in each selected areas ranged from ten to fifty. The field survey determined the distribution of Foc in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It was surveyed that Foc tropical race 4 is widely distributed in Mindanao but not present in Luzon and Visayas. This study confirmed that high incidence of Fusarium wilt in Luzon and Visayas is caused by Foc race 1 while in Mindanao it is caused by Foc tropical race 4. The information generated in this study would be useful in the strict implementation of rules and regulations regarding the movement of banana planting materials from Mindanao to other parts of the country where FocTR4 is not present.
