Productivity and grain quality of aromatic rice lines under organic cultivation

The experiment was conducted at the certified organic area of Ramon Magsaysay-Center for Agricultural Resources and Environmental Studies (RM-CARES), Central Luzon State University, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] conducted during wet season to evaluate the agronomic performance, grain quality and sensory attribute of different aromatic rice lines and to identify which lines can give high yield under organic cultivation. The five treatments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Five lines used in the study, were: H122, H138, H278, H295 and CL1-Basmati as check cultivar. Among the lines evaluated CL1 matures at 85 days from transplanting and had the most number of tillers while H278 matures at 109 days after transplanting with the longest panicles. Lines H295 had more number of filled spikelet per panicle and heaviest grain weight. The highest grain yield (2.71 t/ha) was recorded from H138. All of the entries had head rice recovery significantly higher than CL1 (check). In terms of sensory attributes, result showed that CL1 found superior compared with all lines evaluated. The rest of the line had good eating qualities, but not as good as the CL1 (Check). Generally, the best performing aromatic rice line evaluated under organic cultivation during wet season was on H138 which gave higher yield than the check. Furthermore, CL1 (check) proved its superiority in terms of sensory attributes.
