Diversity of epidermal appendages and stomata in family Poaceae

Taxonomic studies of grasses are of prime importance from systematic point of view. These taxonomic studies are proved to be helpful in delimitation of the taxa at the species, genus and tribe level. The present study was conducted to investigate the foliar epidermal anatomy of different species belonging to different genera of family Poaceae. For this study total of 22 species belonging to 15 genera were collected from different areas of Punjab. The studies revealed that the epidermal thickness and epidermal cell area was large in Paspaledium flavidium, the sclerenchyma thickness was maximum in Desmostachya bipinnata and area of vascular bundle was recorded maximum in Eragrostis tenella. Most of the leaves showed highly developed bullifom cells. Maximum thickness of bulliform cells was observed in Eragrostis tenella. It was also observed that in most of the species stomata were present in larger number on the abaxial surface of leaf as compared to adaxial surface. In some species trichomes were also recorded and maximum length of trichomes was noticed in Paspalum paspaloides. It was explored that the diversity in different anatomical characteristics present within genera and species act as a valuable tool for the correct identification of species. In addition, by using these anatomical modifications their tolerance to environmental stresses can be assessed.
