Co-inoculation with Rhizobium and Azotobacter for improving nodulation and yield of mung bean (Vigna radiata)

Mungbean is grown in arid and semi arid regions of Pakistan. Its production is very low due to different environmental stresses. This could be improved by inoculating the seeds with combined use of Rhizobium and Azotobacter. A study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of Rhizobium and Azotobacter separately and in combination with each other. The effect of inoculation was studied at two different levels of nitrogen (15 and 30 kg per ha). Results of the study revealed that separate inoculations with the Rhizobium and Azotobacter enhanced all the studied parameters. But the effect was more pronounced when both of them were co- inoculated. On making a comparison between two levels of nitrogen (15 and 30 kg per ha), it was shown that inoculation at N level of 15 kg per ha gave better results. It was also revealed from the results that co- inoculation showed 32.4%, 104%, 120%, 153.4%, 168%, 170%, 54.7%, 53.7%, 8.7%, 43.5%, 36%, 44.3%, 21.2%, 127.3%, increase in the parameters such as/Plant height, number of nodules, number of pods, root fresh weight, root dry weight, root length, 1000-grain weight, total grain yield, N% in grains, N% in straw, P% in grains, P% in straw, Protein in grains, Protein in straw, number of grains per plant respectively over un-inoculated control at N level of 15 kg per ha.
