Study of adsorption process of textile dyes using magnetic composite

Water pollution due to industrial effluents discharged in rivers, lakes, ponds is the major problem of the developing countries like Pakistan. These effluents contain toxic dyes, which directly disturb the aquatic life as well as terrestrial livings. In the present study, cheap magnetic adsorbent was prepared for the efficient elimination of toxic dyes Drimaren Blue HF-CD (CDG) and Drimaren Navy CL-R (GR) used in textile industry. Agro-industrial waste such as corncob was modified to get magnetic composite and were used for the adsorption of dyes. The adsorption experiments were carried out as function of temperature, initial dye concentration, biosorbent dose, contact time and pH. The biosorption data was analyzed by applying various adsorption isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Harkins-Jura. The kinetic studies for the adsorption of textiles dyes onto magnetic biocomposite were investigated using pseudo first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for the confirmation of adsorption of the dyes at specific binding sites and surface morphology of magnetic corncobs composite, respectively. Results of FT-IR showed that functional groups on the magnetic composites were present for loading the dyes. Result of SEM images confirmed the presence of magnetic nanoparticles present on the native corncob biomass. It was indicated that magnetic biocomposite obtained from corncob may be a better candidate as adsorbent for the removal of toxic textile dyes.
