Growth and productivity of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) in response to different pre-sowing treatments

Synchronization of emergence is very important to attain good plant population and for profitable yield in crops. A study was conducted on various pre-sowing treatments to decrease pre-emergence time as well as growth and yield of okra. Experiment was conducted at Vegetable Research Area, Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad to evaluate the efficiency of hydro-priming, halo-priming and magnetic field treatments on germination and growth of two Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) varieties (Super Green and Sabz Pari). Treated and untreated seeds were sown in lines (p x P 6 inches) on ridges (75cm apart) under RCBD factorial arrangement. Parameters regarding growth (mean emergence time, final seed emergence [%], seedling length [cm], shoot length [cm], fresh and dry weight of seedling [g], number of leaves, chlorophyll content of seedling), physiological (stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis, transpiration rate, water use efficiency) and yield (pod length [cm] pod weight [g], pod diameter [mm], number of fruits per plant, yield per plant [g]) were recorded. Results of experiment showed that among all treatments, seeds exposed to 100 mT magnetic field for 20 minutes showed maximum improvement in growth, physiological and yield parameters over control and other treatments.
