Expression of OsPTF1 in rice treated with Piriformospora indica and grown under phosphorus deficient conditions

Being second after wheat, rice is one of our important commercial field crops. It feeds millions of people worldwide. Being major field crop, it returns considerable amount of foreign exchange to Pakistan. Nutrient deficiency and less nutrient use efficiency are major problems limiting rice grain yield in Pakistan. Exploitation of plant-microbial symbiotic association can be a helping hand to improve rice grain yield under deficient soil conditions. Piriformospora indica is an efficient plant promoting mycorrhizal endophytic fungi. In present study, four genotypes of rice viz. Super Basmati, Bas-515, KSK-133 and KSK-282 were treated with P. indica using vermiculite based formulation. Treated and untreated seeds were sown in phosphorus deficient and normal soil conditions under factorial completely randomized design. Data for plant height, tillers per plant, panicle length and weight, straw yield, total biomass, harvest index, grain yield, phosphorus uptake and 100-grain weight was recorded and analyzed under factorial Completely Randomized Design and Biplot. Selected combination of genotype and nutrition condition were proceeded for expression analysis of OsPTF1 gene using gene specific primers. The ANOVA results were significant and through graphical representation and biplot analysis, it was concluded that P. indica is genotype specific in its symbiotic association as it helped only Basmati-515 to cope with the phosphorus deficiency, P. indica is recommended for use after assessment of association with desired variety.
