After early attempts in the second half of the 19th century and the time when Alexander II edited the Manifest of the Peasants liberalization (1861), which was more about personal liberalization than the improvement of their economic position, at the beginning of the 20th century the research of peasant status and significant improvement of peasant theory started in Russia. The position of peasants at their small holdings was very difficult. They were unproductive and surpluses were possible to be made only if the family barely made ends meet. Such conditions influenced a number of researchers to examine the peasant economy which resulted with the peasant theory made by A. V. Čajanov. This paper presents the development of the theory that has served a few times in recent history (even during the so called Green Revolution) as a base for global policies concerning small agricultural holdings.
