Both the vitality and appearance of plane trees are significantly affected by Discula platani (Peck) Sacc., the causal agent of plane tree anthracnose. Chemical control of this pathogen in urban areas is limited because of the negative effect of fungicides on the environment. Due to their favorable ecotoxicological properties and exhibited antimicrobial activity, essential oils have great potential in the control of plant pathogens. In this paper, several rates of wild oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil were tested against D. platani in vitro. The aim was to determine the minimum oil rate with lethal effect on D. platani. The effect of wild oregano essential oil on D. platani was also tested in vivo, on plane tree shoots. The minimum rate of wild oregano essential oil that resulted in lethal effect on the Plat3 isolate amounted to 0.06 ml/cm3 of air, while the NSPlat6 isolate showed heterogeneous sensitivity. The oil also exhibited fungicidal activity against D. platani in vivo on inoculated plane tree shoots, and no phytotoxic effects were noticed.
