Achieving high and stable yields of potato, a strategically important foodstuff, is not possible without the application of chemical protection. Although the use of pesticides increases yields and profits, it creates considerable health concerns because it leaves pesticide residues in food. The method of LC-MS/MS was used in the analysis of nine potato samples, collected from Belgrade and Novi Sad markets. The method was validated and confirmed by the use of CRM reference material and the samples were analyzed for the presence of 34 pesticides. The LC-MS/MS analysis showed the presence of pesticide residues in 44% of the samples tested, even though their content was below the MRLs. The pesticides detected belong to the group of fungicides (spiroxamine, zoxamide, carbendazime, metalaxyl and pyrimethanil) and insecticides (pirimiphos-methyl, imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen), several of which have not been registered in the Republic of Serbia for potato protection (carbendazim, pyrimiphosmethyl and pyriproxyfen). This suggests that farmers should comply with the principles of good agricultural practices and use only the products registered for this purpose in the Republic of Serbia.
