English. Since beginning of 1990-ies technological possibilities and production capacities of primary wood processing companies has been increasing year by year. Therefore question about availability of wood resources and their utilization is becoming more and more topical. It is forecasted that import of round wood will continue to decrease and therefore development of Latvian wood processing sector should be based on utilization of local timber resources. Main tasks of the research were to evaluate availability of round wood resources, their current utilization volumes and dynamics, structure of processed round wood and geographical location of primary wood processing companies as well as compare annual round wood consumption with calculated sustainable cutting volumes. To fulfil these tasks, since 2009 biyearly monitoring of Latvian primary wood processing companies has been carried out. For evaluation of the round wood utilization balance, data from the questionnaire of primary woodworking companies were supplemented with data form analysis of external trade of forest industry and data of firewood usage in Latvia according to Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia. Analysis shows that dominance of large wood processing companies is increasing in primary wood production sector. In 2016 they processed 76% from annual round wood volume in the country. Net export balance of round wood in Latvia in 2016 was 2.15 million m**3 , which is 1.25 million m**3 less than in 2012. Statistical analysis shows that consumption of softwood timber in Latvia can’t be increased on local round wood account.
