This workshop was held at Montpellier, France, 1-6 February 1998, in order to agree standardized methods and approaches for the IPGRI/International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) cooperative project entitled "Cocoa germplasm utilization and conservation: a global approach". These workshop proceedings are divided into 4 main sections. The first section presents 4 introductory papers dealing with the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), the role of the ICCO in the project, project history and implementation, and project and workshop objectives. The second section includes 6 papers on general project strategies and approaches. The third main section lists 31 working procedures which are grouped into 3 subsections: implementation of selection trials and data collection; disease resistance; and insect resistance and control. The final section examines the application of working procedures in the CFC/ICCO/IPGRI Project. Five appendices are included: (1) terms of reference for the Technical Working Group and (2) for the co-financiers Working Group, (3) workshop programme, (4) list of participants, and (5) list of abbreviations and acronyms.
