Промене величине и структуре земљишног поседа у кнежевини Србији (1834 – 1867) / Changes in the size and structure of land properties in the principality of Serbia during the mid-19th century

The arable land in the Principality of Serbia was greatly increased between 1834 and 1867 (almost 100%), since agriculture was based on creation of new arable land by separation from the common municipal land. However, the size of the average property increased only by about 20%, as the large increase in population, mostly agrarian, nullified the achieved results. Still, the properties were increased to the optimal size for the conditions of existential farming. In the structure of private land, there were mostly fields and their share was growing (from about two-thirds to about three-fourths of arable land), followed by meadows, whose share did not change significantly. At the same time, by 1862 farmers became owners of the land intended for livestock breeding (the so-called zabrans), which the farmers could only use before. In this way, due to the intensive spread of arable land, the reduced pasture areas on common land were compensated, which enabled the unobstructed development of livestock breeding.
