Chemical composition of Bambusa vulgaris shoots as influenced by harvesting time and height

The chemical composition of Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. Ex Wendl. Shoots was investigated as an alternative feedstock and substrate for different bioconversion processes. Shoots having heights of 30, 60 and 90 cm were harvested at the onset and towards the end of the rainy season in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines. Chemical analyses using standard procedures showed ranges in composition of 36.7-49.9% for holocellulose, 14.2-29.6% for 𝝰-cellulose, 11.6-20.3% for lignin, 5.3-9.2% for cyclohexane-ethanol extractives, 24.4-34.9% for hot water extractives, and 9.1%-11.6% for ash. Shoots harvested at the onset of the rainy season had higher hot water extractives and lignin content compared to those harvested at the end of the rainy season, by 9.2% and 4.8%, respectively. On the other hand, shoots harvested at the end of the rainy season had higher ash, holocellulose and alpha-cellulose content, by 0.8%, 11.6% and 11.9%, respectively. With shoot height, lignin content increased by as much as 6.0% while ash content decreased by 1.8%. The study suggests that harvesting time and shoot height could influence chemical composition of the shoots; as such, they should be taken into consideration for the more efficient utilization of the resource.
