Optimization of the wheat starch suspensions microfiltration process using twisted tape as turbulence promoter

Microfiltration and ultrafiltration are commonly used in starch processing wastewater treatment in order to satisfy restrictive environmental regulations and enable water reuse, as a valuable resource. Over the time, membrane separation performances are disrupted causing undesirable decline of permeate flux. In order to prevent membrane fouling, different mechanisms are developed and one of them implies use of turbulence promoter. However, the efficiency of turbulence promoter has to be examined from two aspect, i.e. does it provide an increase in permeate flux and whether its application is economically justified? The idea of this study was to continue the previous research related to the influence of the twisted tape static mixer on the permeate flux during the microfiltration process, in order to determine the energy consumption, as a result of the static mixer usage, and to optimize investigated process. According to results, optimal conditions for microfiltration process in the system with static mixer are: the maximum value of transmembrane pressure of 0.9 bar, suspension flow rate of 89.8 L/h and the minimum concentration of 5 g/L, which corresponds to the value of permeate flux of 154 L/m2h and the value of the reduction of the specific energy consumption of 5.26%.
