Rhizomania is the most important disease of sugar beet worldwide, caused by beet necrotic yellow veinvirus (BNYVV). This virus is transmitted by the zoospores of Polymyxa betae, which is widespread soil-borne pathogen. Severe sugar beet infections, with this virus, reduce root yield by 50% or more, resulting in sugar content and product quality reduction. Research on the genetic variabil- ity of BNYVV provides information that can elucidate its evolutionary and geo- graphical origins, changes in virulence (breakthrough resistance to RBs), and the development of new epidemics. Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) has a worldwide distribution. Four major types of this virus have been detected: type A, B, P and J.
