Determination of noise pollution in streets and sensitive areas in Kayseri

Nowadays, the increase of the population has led to many problems. Especially in recent years, noise pollution has caused physical and psychological negativities in people's lives. In this context, noise pollution has crucial importance for human health. Increasing in the number of vehicles in paralel with the population increase, inadequancy in some points in the existing roads and the wrong behavior of the drivers due to the lack of education causes increase in noise pollution.In this thesis study, it was aimed to determined noise pollution trouble that people living in Kayseri City has been exposed and to define precautions which may help to local and central administration for eliminating of this environmental trouble. In this context, the noise levels were measured in 10 main streets where the traffic is intense in order to determine the noise level values originating from the traffic especially for Kayseri city center, and 7 hospitals and 9 schools in the city between 08:00-09:30 hours in the morning and between 17:00-20:00 hours in the evening. The traffic noise levels in the city were carried for 3 weeks in every street at intervals of 1 km. The levels of noise pollution were averagely varied between 40-65 dB(A) in the schools, 45-65 dB(A) in the hospitals and 65-70 dB(A) in the streets. Since the measurement results are evaluated, it is observed that the noise intensity changes depending on the vehicle traffic. In addition, a survey was conducted with a total of 153 people, 51 of which were for each category, in the streets, schools and hospitals in the scope of this study. A survey conducted at the points where the noise intensity is high for Kayseri City center, has also investigated how uncomfortable the participants of the survey are from different sources of noise.According to the results of there search, it is regarded that noise is an environmental problem based on 98% of the residence survey, 90% of the school survey and 73% of the survey in the hospitals. By the fact of the measurements and the questionnaire surveys, preventive or reductive solutions related with the noise intensity in the city were presented and precaution against to noise pollution were proposed.
