FAO's work on climate change: United Nations Climate Change Conference 2018

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 821 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. The 2018 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) cites the changing climate as a key driver behind this sudden rise in the global number of hungry people in the world. While no other sector is more vulnerable to extreme and volatile weather events, food and agriculture provide numerous opportunities to adapt to, mitigate and build resilience to climate change. Realizing the commitments that countries made to transform food systems and promote sustainable agriculture approaches can still deliver a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030. This publication presents FAO’s key messages on climate change and food security. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so they are better able to adapt to the impacts of climate change in the agricultural sectors. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including the tools and methodologies used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.
