Ghana, evaluation for ation: assessing animal disease surveillance capacities

In response to a request by African member countries in Phase 1 of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), FAO developed the Surveillance Evaluation Tool (SET) to assess animal disease surveillance systems and provide country specific recommendations for improvement in the form of an action plan. After piloting the toolkit in Tanzania and Liberia, the toolkit was finalized and made available to other countries. An evaluation mission in Ghana was conducted in March 2019 and a final report was drafted with the country’s veterinary services and approved by the Chief Veterinary Officer of Ghana. This report provides development partners with details on findings and recommendations to improve Ghana’s animal and zoonotic disease surveillance, contributing to a multifaceted approach to capacity building in the country, and in the region. In addition, it will enhance transparency of the work done by FAO under GHSA and with financing from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Lastly, other countries reading the report may see benefits in undergoing SET evaluation missions themselves
