Effect of apple vinegar cider in the expression of aromatase enzyme and estrogen receptors in gonadal tissues of male rats

OBJECTIF : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with increased risk of reproductive problems. Aromatase catalyzes the conversion of androgens to estrogens and is expressed in a variety of tissues. Estrogens effects are mediated by classical receptors, ESR1 and ESR2. The benefic effects of vinegar have been known for more a century and have been demonstrated in animal as well as human studies. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of apple cider vinegar on the expression of testicular aromatase and estrogen receptors (ER) in diabetic rats. MATERIEL ET METHODES : Male albino rats were used for the present investigations. The animals were fasted overnight and diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared streptozotocin (STZ) (65mg/kg) in citrate buffer. Vinegar cider was orally administrated to the diabetic rats. Control rats were injected with citrate buffer and the treatment was continued for 4 weeks. RESULTATS : Our results demontrated a decrease of the aromatase and of ER (1 and 2) gene expression of diabetic rats and a return to near control values of the vinegar diabetic group. DISCUSSION : These results indicate that apple vinegar cider is beneficial for spermatogenesis and likely improves the protection of the cells via an increase of aromatase/ER gene expression.
