Alfalfa plants contain water-soluble substances that inhibit the germination and seedling growth ofalfalfa in laboratory studies. However, this effect may be absent under field conditions. This workevaluates the autotoxicity of alfalfa under field conditions when reseeding alfalfa in rotation intervalsof 15 days, six months and 12 months. The study was carried out under irrigation conditions in theEbro valley, in Zaragoza during 2009-2013. A lower establishment was observed when the rotationinterval between alfalfa stands was 15 days or six months compared to that of 12 months. The forageyield was significantly lower when the rotation interval was 15 days, but decreased only in the firstyear in the other delays. The crude protein content was not affected by the autotoxicity. Resultssuggest that alfalfa autotoxicity may not be an obstacle for reseeding alfalfa stands under fieldconditions, at least, if a rotation interval of 12 months is established between alfalfa stands.
