Effect of nitrogen and poplar spacing on yield and nutrients content of Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.)

Performance of taro (Colocasia esculenta (L) schott) under six nitrogen levels (0, 50, 75, 100, 125 & 150 Kg/ha) and three poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr. Ex. Marsh) spacing (Open, 5m x 4m and 5m x 3m) was investigated in subtropical zone of Himachal Pradesh. The average relative illumination below 5m x 4m and 5m x 3m poplar spacing was 48 and 40%, respectively. The nitrogen application induced improvement over control but failed to obtain significant difference in growth and yield parameters of the crop except leaf number per plant. The nutrient content (N, P & K) in corm as well as leaf depicted an improvement with increase in nitrogen level. The shade brought drastic reduction in growth and yield in open. Among N, P and K contents in corms, only P & K were influenced significantly due to poplar spacing, both registering only significant influence on plant height and number of leaves per plant.
