Effects of varying regimes of shade on comparative crop phenology of mustard (Brassica juncea Coss.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Experiment was conducted at varying intensity of shades (33%, 50% and 75% shade) in simulated shade-net houses and in open field to observe the impacts of shade on phenology of crops like mustard and wheat for consecutive two rabi seasons in the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 at National Research Centre for Agroforestry, Jhansi. Though cent percent seed germination was observed in all the regimes of shade and in open field as well, it was faster in shade than in open field in both the crops. Expansion rates of leaf length and lamina width were higher in shade than in open grown plants. Number of days required to flowering initiation considerably varied depending upon the intensity of shades in both the crops. In mustard flowering initiation was observed 4 days earlier in open than in 33% shade. Flowering initiation was delayed by 10 days in 50% shade and 14 days in 75% shade in comparison to the open in mustard. In wheat also flowering initiation was observed 4 days earlier in open than in 33% shade. In this case, flowering initiation was delayed by 15 days in 75% shade and 10 days in 50% shade in comparison to the open. Similar trend was also observed with pod formation in both the crops. Trends in the observed crop phenology were consistent in both the two years of experimentation. Results indicated that wheat and mustard have shown responsive changes with reference to the impacts of shade in modulating the crop phenology. Such information on crop phenology of wheat and mustard assumes much importance mainly in semi-arid agroclimatic region of Central India for agroforestry perspectives in the climate change scenarios.
