Foliar blights of wheat: Current status in India and identification of donor lines for resistance through multilocational evaluation

The foliar blights of wheat include leaf blight and blotches which are caused by species of Alternaria and Helminthosporium. Monitoring of foliar blight at the National Centre on foliar diseases, Faizabad, revealed that Helminthosporium sativum [Cochliobolus sativus] is the most predominant pathogen in India and neighbouring countries. Since it is not economically feasible to practice chemical control on a large scale, breeding disease resistant varieties is the only practical alternative for the management of the disease. However, all the commercial varieties are susceptible and host resistance could not be improved due to lack of donor lines for resistance. Hence attempts were made to identify disease resistant wheat stocks in multilocational testing (MLT) in blight endemic areas in northeastern India, during 1986-94. None of the lines/varieties were found to be resistant. 32 lines of moderate resistance are listed for use in the breeding programme.
