Efficacy of some bioagents in managing root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita in Bittergourd

A field experiment was conducted at Central Research Farm, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Gayeshpur, Nadia for two consecutive years during 2016 and 2017 for the management of root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita race 2 on bittergourd using fungal and bacterial bioagents such as Purpureocillium lilacinum, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus pumilus along with vermicompost and FYM as soil application at the time of sowing in comparison with the combination of the bioagents, individual application of vermicompost, mulching with green leaves of mustard. At the same time it is compared with the soil application of chemical nematicide carbofuran. Results revealed that soil application of Purpureocillium lilacinum @ 2.5 kg with 2.5 tons of vermicompost/ha + Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 2.5 kg/ha along with 2.5 tons of vermicompost/ha was the most effective method to control root knot nematode in bitter gourd with highest yield of 5.26 t/ha & 3.62 t/ha in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Highest soil nematode population reduction (55% & 69% in 2016 and 2017 respectively) was also noticed in the same treatment. Treatments with application of fungal bioagent, Purpureocillium lilacinum (cfu 2x 106) @ 2.5 kg along with 2.5 tons vermicompost/ha and application of carbofuran @10g/m2 were also effective for management of root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. Observations on root-knot index at harvest was non significant, however, the incremental cost benefit ratio (ICBR) was highest in mulching with green leaves of mustard treatment among the treatments.
