The Böckler-Mare-Balticum-Stiftung, a Foundation for Cultural Heritage Research and Promotion, founded in 1977 in Germany by a Baltic German Eric Böckler (1904–1990), is devoting its current cycle of public lectures to studies of the culture of garden and park located in the Baltic region, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Germany, identifying relevant topics of academic interest. To this end, an international conference was held in both Riga and Turaida dealing with the history of gardens and parks in six countries, as well as with the preservation and transformation over the past decade of cultural artefacts from their historic layout. Conference participants from Germany, Finland, Poland and all three Baltic countries will present their research findings and, through expeditions, explore the most significant historical parks in Vidzeme and contemporary garden art. The conference organisers recognise that the cultural heritage of gardens and parks is extremely vast and varied, and also, that it is not fully known in terms of its historical amplitude, form and aesthetic diversity. Therefore, both the conference sessions and this collection of articles highlight insights into the methods and practices involved in preserving the original values of historic parks, as well as exploring the diversity of cultural artefacts located in the investigated gardens and parks.
