A review on utilization and performance of MPOB PS Series genetic materials

MPOB assembled the largest oil palm germ plasm collection in the world. Elaeis guineensis genetic materials was collected in Nigeria, Cameroon, Zaire, Tanzania, Madagascar, Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ghana and Angola. E. oleifera germ plasm was gathered in Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, Suriname, Brazil, and Panama. In addition, other economic palm species such as Jessenia, Oenocarpus, Babassu and Bactris were also collected in Colombia and Peru. The first generation of value added planting materials namely PORIM Series I (PSI) and PORIM Series (PS2) were released to the industry in 1994. PSI is known for dwarfness and PS2 for high iodine value. These are based on Nigerian duras and A VROS pisiferas. Later generations of planting materials, PSl.l and PS2.1, are based on elite Deli duras crossed with population 12 (dwarf) and 0.151/128 (high iodine value). The population 12 is known for low height increment of 30-40cm per year and 0.151/128 has 1 V. of > 60. The experimental PSI. 1 and PS2.1 seeds have been distributed to the industry for large scale testing. PS3 planting material is being developed for high kernel; increasing the level of kernel to bunch from 6 to 12% thus doubling the kernel content in current planting materials. New series of planting materials, PS4, for high carotene based on E. oleiftra and other Series for big fruits, thin shell, carotene, bunch index and vitamin E have been released to the industry from MPOB germplasm collections.
