Food plants in Malaysia fall under several categories: foreign or local; large, medium or small; modem or primitive. A description of the above categories of food industry in Malaysia is presented.The paper also deals with the level of quality control practised indifferent food industries, the efforts made by the government sector to assist the small processors and the difficultiesfaced by the enforcement personnel to prosecute unscrupulous processors. Results of the analyses on chemical and nutritional composition, level of food additives, heavy metal contaminants, microorganisms present and total viable counts in different foods are discussed.
