Nitrogen fertilization enhanced growth and nutrient accumulation in Oenanthe javanica
2008

Growth and nutritional quality of water parsley were improved with N fertilization. Shoot and total plant biomass, branches, chlorophyll and elemental concentrations all displayed significant responses to increasing N rates. Plant biomass increased with increasing N rates. Shoot fresh and dry mass were maximum at 180kgh-¹ N. Increasing external N enhanced accumulation of nutrient elements, chlorophyll and ascorbic acid concentrations. Leaf Fe content increased by 27% as N in growing media increased from J00 to J80kgh-¹. Increasing the elemental and ascorbic acid concentrations in water parsley through N fertility modification would be expected to increase the nutritional value of this herbal crop. The results suggested that water parsley should be supplemented with N for optimum shoot growth and quality.
