Influence of nitrogen phosphorus and potassium deficiency on free amino acid content and growth of sapota (Manilkara achras Forsberg) plants

Essential nutrient elements perform a specific metabolic role in the plant system. When they are in limited supply, there will be a disruption in the metabolic process of the plant, including change in amino acid metabolism and accumulation. To elucidate the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency on growth and free amino acid content in sapota plants, sand culture experiments were conducted. Nitrogen deficient plants had higher serine, glutamic acid, methionine and lower aspartic acid, threonine and valine content. While, phosphorus deficient plants showed higher levels of arginine, aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, leucine, lysine and histidine and low methionine content. The deficiency of potassium appeared to cause appreciable increase in phenylalanine and decreased level of arginine. The dry weight of plant decreased two fold in nitrogen and phosphorus deficient conditions, while there was no change in potassium deficient plants
